Space should not be a problem. We do archive/maintenance data very often...
However, slow performance would be a big issue...I will consider all your
suggestions, run some test them make decision.
Again, thank you all for your time.

Subject: Re: [EDI-L] GIS/SI mapping question: xml or positional format?

Nice analysis.

I'm in the flat file camp too and I was asking myself if there were legitimate
reasons for that. Now I remember, there are.

When I use XML its because I have to for one reason or another. I've not yet
ever found a reason to deliberately switch from flat file to XML. Its probably
why companies with mature EDI systems haven't chucked it all in for XML
instead. Why fix what isn't broken? Why send the SWAT team when the county
sheriff's deputy and a soda can get the job done?

It depends on many factors.. As others said

1. Storage space - XML will need enormous disk space due to size of data.
2. Maintainability - its tedious to maintain XML maps unless they have very
similar format with the respective input/output data
3. Performance: As XML map is larger, and data goes through XML parser, it will
need few more milliseconds to complete than that of flat-file
4. Readability: XML is more readable than that of positonal.. (How many times
you need to read the data? Error report will anyway tell you where the problem
is.)
5. XSLT: XML->Flat file and vice versa, I wonder if you'll use it much

in short.. if you have loads of money to spend, go for XML otherwise stick with
good old flat-file format. my 5 Cents .

EDI environment: SI 5.06 (GIS) with Oracle database.
We're going to migrate our EDI/GIS system in which we need to remap all GIS
maps. Currently we are using both xml and positional formats. In the new
system, we need to choose one standard mapping format. My question to SI (GIS)
experts in EDI-L group: What format do you prefer (xml or positional format)?
And what is advantage of chosing one format over the other?

TIA,

LV
