Skip, I would absolutely agree with you on that issue and in fact I did some
work as the product manager for an edi translator that interfaced directly into
a progress database. My preferred method would be a direct database load, then
XML for readability, ( I don't see storage space as being a significant issue
any more) and flat files. I work with all three routinely, however, I am
currently working with a customer who is upgrading their system plant by plant
and need to divide the inbound plant by plant. So we convert X12 to XML, and
route the data to the correct system for that plant. Eventually, perhaps, we
can do direct dbloads as all of the plants will be on the upgraded system. I
still maintain that it's much easier to troubleshoot a labeled xml files as
opposed to a positional flat file and the resources, while greater, are not
exorbitant.
