I'd come up with something similar... Not only do I send the Invoice to the Project Sponsor, the Project Manager, but also the AP person directly (even though they cannot pay until the Invoice is approved).
The new "improvement" is going to be to include a small table with outstanding Invoices, including a "Due Date" column...
