That, Jim, is a whole different ball of wax..... in that regard, you're not
talking about "typical" retail, but more like mail order fulfillment. And yes,
I'm sure that the data can be sent in the 850 PO. But that's really more of an
exception to the rule, rather than the rule. And I think that may fall outside
of our original poster's concepts. That data is being sent by Amazon (or
whomever) to drop ship an item to a specific customer. It's not a request
(demand?) from the supplier to their distributor for customer data. Instead,
it's more about fulfilling an order placed by a customer on a website.

If you've got an established business relationship with a supplier (or a
customer/distributor/retailer) for EDI, adding an additional drop ship PO is no
big deal - as long as the trading partner is set up to process the data AND the
order. If not, then, yes, the "one & two" types of orders may not be an
efficient way of doing business, but it's still a sale and a way to make your
customer happy.

And again, wholly different from our poster's original question.

Sorry -- DTC= Direct to Consumer (and sometimes Dropship to
Consumer), not a segment.

Some of the larger retailers dotcom divisions are attempting
to move to this model, and it may well be the wave of the
future.
The particular customer using the 850 I'm familiar with is
is a mail-order marketer.

But doesn’t Amazon also have EDI for this type of
Direct-to-Consumer shipping?

The Consumer address is sent in an N1ST-N2-N3-N4 loop.
Delivery Phone and contact for UPS or small parcel carrier
is in a PER segment, and there's a REF CO qualifier which
gives us the Customer's Order Number (the dealer's PO number
is different). There's some addition FOB segment detail
too.

Doing EDI for onesies and twosies is not really an efficient
way for us to do business, so we've strongly resisted going
this route. But it is definitely out there.
