We use data sync with Wal-mart. I agree with Earl in general - I think the
answer is no, but the larger vendor you are - the harder they will push. I'm
not sure why we do it, since we're a tiny speck of a vendor... They do email
campaigns to vendors trying to get you on board. I don't think they say
optional, but I don't think they fine you if you don't make the move - at this
time, anyway.

If I remember right they use a sliding price model based on your company's
annual sales. At the bottom, I think it's like $500 annual for <100 upcs.
And that is not really doing data sync, just like the old catalogs, they have a
website you can load your data into. For actual synching of records via
automated xml communication - you're looking at like $15K at the bottom just to
get the wheels turning. Expect that to be an extremely costly route to take. If
you got it working it may pay for itself at least as quickly as your 1st gen
Prius.

The one useful thing to come of it was it got all the disparate online catalogs
to start linking their data. Before we had one customer requesting a GXS
catalog and another wanting a QRS catalog, etc.

Just be glad it *actually exists* now. I started trying to set our company up
when it was UCCnet. We wasted around $10k in fees for services that were
basically vaporware. Precious little documentation, and what was there changed
a few weeks after you read it.

Yes, it is an online catalog. You upload your UPC number (aka GTIN number),
other related item info and give them lots of money.

They allow your trading partners to download the product info into their
databases.

Mandatory for Walmart? No (I'm pretty sure).

Expensive? Yes. Last time I looked at it, it was about $10.00 per item and
then $10 per item per year.

1SYNC is one the the 'Data Pools' for UPC info. GS1 is the new organization
which is making money from the UPC numbers...

There are other Data Pools, including Inovis (previously known as QRS).
