Walmart has mandated GDSN for some vendors, some of the time. When they do mandate it for a vendor, they are pretty serious about it and will hold back orders for items that are not sync'd.
In general, data sync (via the GDSN) can be very expensive - but 1SYNC is NOT the only option. There are about 30 certified data pools around the world right now, of which I think about 5 are not operated by a GS1 organization. 1SYNC is operated by GS1 US, GS1 Canada operates a closed data pool (ECCNet) as well as a certified data pool (ECCNet + GDSN) but as of today they are not connected services, and belonging to ECCnet will not enable you to do GDSN data sync. Each data pool has different pricing models, so if you are being asked or mandated by a trading partner to do data sync make sure you do your research and find a data pool that fits your needs and your budget. By definition each certified data pool MUST be interoperable with every other data pool and therefore you have a choice of any certified data pool. You can see the list of all certified data pools here http://www.gs1.org/docs/gdsn/gdsn_certified_data_pools.pdf (this list is maintained by GS1 GDSN which is separate from GS1 US or any of the other 'GS1 member organizations'. SPS Universal Catalog is not actually a certified Data pool - it connects to the GDSN via 1SYNC. Inovis also utilizes 1SYNC to get to the GDS Network. That's all well and good but when it is dictated that you use a Data Sync type process your chat is thrown right out the window. Sorry guys...I know I will get tomatoes thrown at me but I couldn't resist the plug...$10 per item is not fiscally practical nor should it be acceptable. The SPS Universal Catalog will satisfy your requirements for a fraction. Let me know if you wish to chat about it.
