Broadstreet would come into picture here.
Is GS1 applicable for only Canada??

Duns & Bradstreet are not related. They assign their own identifier, called a
DUNS number.

GS1 is international, and administers the UPC/GTIN and GLN codes.
GS1 used to be called the UPC Council (or something like that).

Hi Earl,

I will stick my neck out and say that your customer probably has been asked
to do this by Lowes as that's the hot compliance topic with our home
improvement customer base right now in Canada.

There is presently a Data Sync initiative on with Lowes and every location
of the vendor - legal entity, warehouse, headquarters , factory etc can have
a GLN number.

.pdf

Theoretically you can create your own GLN's - company prefix+ assigned
number+ check digit but it seems like you do have to get these GLN's blessed
by GS1 Canada( or whatever geographic region impacts you) and they will
register them.

But once you get the GLN's approved by GS1 Canada, you should be fine- you
will then need a GDSN provider and there are a few out there.

Call me if you need additional assistance.

Sincerely,

Vijay Thomas B.Eng, M.B.A

Subject: [EDI-L] GLN Number required

One of my clients called and said that they needed a GLN.
(Global LOCATION Number)

My experience until now, is that only Walmart has been using GLNs for their
various Store and DC locations.

This request is related to using a UPC Product Data Pool (ie. GS1, ad
nauseum).

They already have a manufacturer UPC prefix.

The GLN is a 13 digit number composed of the GS1 prefix (7 digits), Location

Reference (5 digits) and checksum.

I am ready to tell them to 'Make one up', by using their existing GS1
prefix,
some 5 digit number for their location and calculating the checksum.

Here in Canada, I have had a lot of problems when trying to get information
about existing UPC prefixes. (Bottom line: They would not release the
information unless I joined. The whole point of confirming the ownership of
the prefix was to prevent having to join. )
