Rachel,

You make a very good point - given that phone numbers are unique around the
world. The problem would then come up if a company changes their phone
number - or - sells off a division (or buys one) and now that phone number
has changed. And also, given the vagaries of telephone number assignment
around the world (not everybody is the same nor do they all follow the same
rules), there could well be some issues regarding phone numbers and some may
(MAY) be the same in a different country, but with a unique country code or
area code. Yes, it makes it unique, but .. It could lead to some
confusion.

Personally, I don't think (again) that AS2 connections are the "end-all,
be-all" that many people think that they can be. Sure, it's a good idea if
you're a large enough business. But, as has been mentioned in this thread
and others, there are costs and complications involved that some companies
do not wish to get into. I had trading partners that didn't even want to
get into the complications of web-based EDI (such as offered by SPS and DI
Central and others) and preferred an option of EDI to fax communications.
In some cases, maybe they just wanted that nice, faxed PO in their hands
when they went into the warehouse to pull an order. Just like those of us
that still prefer to read a BOOK instead of downloading a document into a
Kindle or a Kobo or an iPad or ..

Vijay, just a thought re the non-uniqueness of today's ISA identifiers -
since telephone numbers are unique around the world as long as the proper
country code is used, wouldn't a telephone number offer the necessary
uniqueness to identify ISA sender/receiver Just a thought.

I truly believe that time has come to democratise the VAN business and let
new entrants in. We have a good model in how the internet has figured out
how to work with multiple domain and hosting providers - they don't have any
of the interconnect rubbish we have in the VAN world - you can access any
website anywhere in the world via a domain name which could be the same as
an ISA ID in the VAN business - I know the ISA ID's are not unique now but
this might be a small price to pay for progress.
