<<usual apologies for cross-posting>> Hi As my brain gradually begins to recognize that in a week or so, there is the chance to put down my pen, stop doing calculations, marking, teaching etc. etc. etc. my thoughts turn to my favourite pastime (well one of them anyway!) reading. I do enough 'technical' reading during the rest of the year that given a chance I read SF, but last Christmas I really enjoyed Simon Singh's book on Fermats Last theorem; not technical but nice coverage of an interesting mathematical odessy. Does anyone know of a book on statistics (or maths) that likewise is a good non-technical read? perhaps about some statistical 'characters' or perhaps history of statistics. If I order it now, it might arrive in time for Christmas!
