I like Minitab, myself. If you are a student, I believe there is a
special deal available from Minitab; perhaps one of my colleagues
whose knowledge is more immediate than mine will care to comment.

Is that my cue?-) You can download a trial copy of Version 13 for the
PC. It dies after a month. There is a Student Edition of Version 12
for PCs and of Version 8 for Macs (and maybe even still for DOS) that
costs about $60 in our college bookstore. These come from Addison-Wesley
rather than Minitab, Inc. I was once involved in a project where we
got a site license for about 100 users and the price for the full
version was close to the price for the Student Edition. (This would
have been an academic license.) You can also often get the Student
Edition bundled with a textbook at a cost that is not much more than
the textbook. Over the years the non-academic market has accounted
for a growing share of Minitab's sales, and the academic prices are
sometimes hard to find. Precisely because the academic discounts
are so large, Minitab might well prefer to lose a dozen sales to academia
than lose one industrial sale because the customer was disgruntled at
paying several times the academic price.
