Take a look at:
S. A. Glanz (1992) "Primer of Biostatistics",
McGraw-Hill, New York, pp. 1--10. (Chapter 1)
This chapter contains several articles from medical journals evaluating
the quality of statistical work in the clinical literature. For
example:
S. Gore at al. (1977) "Misuse of Statistical
Methods: Critical Assessment of Articles in British
Medical Journal", British Medical Journal 1 (6053):85--87.
Glanz cites a number of articles like this. I will try to reproduce
here Figure 1-3 on page 8 from that book:
"Percentage of Original Research Articles
published in various general medical journals
[...] that contained errors in their use of
statistical methods."

It is also interesting to look at Figure 1-1 on page 2: it shows the
rise of medical expenditures in the US between 1934 and 1990. Looks
like the acceleration curve for a Saturn-5 blast off.
I think there might be a relationship between the two graphs.
