Check:   google.com  gives me 687 hits for "lurking variable" .

Maybe those will give you a further suggestions of what 
to translate it to.   

I agree with earlier posts that warned against "hidden"  and "latent".
Those have been used in other places as particular jargon, 
and I don't think they have the right connotations, either.
