Students generally know enough about each others' ID numbers that this isn't anonymous either. At the university where I teach, we use an online package called WebCT. It allows instructors to display test and assignment marks throughout the term. Each student can see his/her own grade, and summary statistics about all the others (e.g., a histogram), but only the instructor can see all the grades.
