friends might ... others don't ... in a psy 1 class of 298 students ... it is silly to think that most students know other students' ids

again, in a small class, it can be more problematic

At the university where I teach, we use an online package called
WebCT. It allows instructors to display test and assignment marks
throughout the term. Each student can see his/her own grade, and
summary statistics about all the others (e.g., a histogram),
this was how this discussion got started ... displaying summary graphs like histograms ... where IF someone knows his/her own score and sees the graph .. he/she might feel bad knowing how "deep" into the distribution he/she was ... doing it online in the context of webct does not alter this a bit

but, my reply is ... so what?

i would say 99.9% of the students i have had over the years ... JUST WANT to be able to see their scores ASAP ... they really get upset if they have to wait a week to find out ... and ... while they don't really want their names listed out there ... most any other way is ok with them ... and, i have never EVER had any student "complain" or ask me to refrain from putting something like a tally of scores on the door ... in fact, most would like even more info ... which to me is a bit of overkill

but only
the instructor can see all the grades.
