LMS's like Blackboard have a feature called "conditional release."
This basically means: the user must perform a certain action in order to access specific content items. Usually, this is something like: earn a certain score on a quiz. This is extremely useful, because it keeps learners from just clicking along without actually learning anything. I can find zero indication that anyone is working on bringing such a feature to EdX.
