The main problem with branching BEFORE the final release is, that most developers keep working on Trunk and only some people take care for the (soon to be) stable release. Which leads to a very long delay, as the stable release gets to less manpower. It's more sexy to work on new features, instead of doing bugfixes. My goal would be to have a feature freeze, everyone goes into bugfixing mode, we get the release done quickly and everyone can develop new cool features.
