Externalization is the same concept as serialization except it is up to the
implementor of the class to do the
serializing and deserializing of the data. The JVM will not do it for you. This will
speed serialization up because the
JVM doesn't have to use reflection to ser/deser for you. You must implement
readExternal(ObjectInput) and
writeExternal(ObjectOutput)

They subclass the CMP bean with a BMP bean implementation and build a new
jar for deployment that has the subclassed bean and a changed DD. See the
EJB2 spec for a description of this approach.
