I have used IAS 4.0 since it was released, and spent some time with it in
beta. My primary focus has been the EJB container.
IAS 4.0 has excellent support for the EJB 1.1 specification. The online
documentation touts many of its features. Performance statistics are very
impressive. IAS 4.0 typically performs at least twice as fast as Weblogic
4.5. This isn't an "official" statistic, just some "real-world" observations
from "real-world" applications.
I am very happy with the product.
If I had to point to any downsides, I would say that they do not have a
transactional cache. Of course this is not required by J2EE, however
Gemstone can leverage this feature in some really cool ways that have a
direct benefit to developers. Inprise would counter that they have a
JDataStore (a pure-java, SQL compliant, extremely fast database).
Also, because of their CORBA support, you can't mix class names and package
names. For example, com.mycompany.employee.Employee will not fly. I would
imagine that this would apply to any servers built on CORBA. This is a minor
inconvenience compared with the many, many advantages of building a server
on a time-tested, robust foundation like the Visigenic ORB.
