Put simply, it's a machine with more than one network card.
Each network card has a different IP address, and are almost always
attached to different network segments.
Traffic to the different IP addresses travels through the respective
network cards, rather than just going through a single card as it would
with simple IP-aliasing.

other network card [assuming sensible networking configuration]
Multi-homing is essential for resilient networking, but is also useful
for "pretending" to be two completely different machines :-)

possible tricks and configurations that are possible, but the above
should give you enough of a flavour of the concept.
