Being prudent, or even a bit paranoid these days, is a good idea. For the
few people that I often communicate with via e-mail, if I am not expecting a
file or URL from them I will send them a message asking if they really sent
one if I get something from them in an e-mail. I also have an older computer
(that I would not mind being trashed) that I could use for the download if I
didn't want to wait for verification as well as a couple of android systems
that probably mildly burp at any attack.

Still, backups of critical data (off site if possible) and a good frequently
updated virus protection system is a good idea. I've never had any problems
on my computers, but have spent considerable time fixing other people
systems that have been victims.
