Typically, 20 meters has a much lower band noise level than 40. At my QTH in the suburbs 20 meters is normally 1 to 2 S-units quieter than 40 meters.
On some rigs the bands may sound equally noisy because the AGC system raises the noise floor to an equal level on each band. It all depends upon how the AGC system is set up. For a good comparison, you might consider springing for one of the Elecraft signal generators such as the XG2 or, for the most versatility the XG3. They will provide a calibrated signal level that you can use for true side-by-side comparisons of the receivers (the XG2 covers 80/40/20 and the XG3 covers all bands from 160 through 2 meters). You can use them to determine the approximate minimum discernable signal on any receiver for a real useful number to use to determine whether a receiver seems "lacking", but your observation that there are loud signals that really stand out on 20 suggests that your K1 is doing just fine. 73, Ron AC7AC -----Original Message----- I have a K1 with a 40/20 filter board. The receiver is much louder on 40. The signals just jump out with plenty of audio. On 20 the signals are not as strong. Every once in while I will hear a strong signal on 20. I suspect that 20 is just not as loud. I have made contacts on 20 to include England. When I do a A/B receiver test with my Yaesu FT-450D, it seems like they are in line. Should I assume this is related to the bands being different. Still saving for my K2.. carrot estended slightly with the 40 dollar increase.. I will get there Thanks 73 k4YND Don ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
