Strange indeed. OSX 10.6.8 Preview Version 5.0.3 (504.1) searches Elecraft_k3_ver2o.pdf just fine.
But yes, there are ways to restrict various functions when you create a pdf. Later versions of the book might have been created differently than the one I have.
