John, You will not need to connect any more pins, but you can try putting a jumper between pins 7 and 8 at the computer end of the cable. No guarantee that it will help, that depends on whether your application tries to do handshaking, but it certainly will not hurt anything.
You did not state that you closed and restarted Winlog32 after you changed the com ports.
