Hi Dick: Solved the problem and it was port related, but not what one would expect.
I took the rig to a friend's house who also has a KX3 and it worked there. What we figured out but I did not realize at my home QTH was that my laptop has a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 port. The 2.0 port works and reads and writes as it should. The 3.0 port recognizes the rig is connected but does not read the firmware list in my KX3. This could be related to my specific computer, or it could be a driver or adapter issue; no real way to tell.
