One other consideration - in winter it's often -20C on the mountain tops -
so an external battery in my inside pocket may be an advantage.

Removing the batteries when the unit will not be used for awhile is good
advice.
I use lithium AAs almost exclusively in my KX1. They have a flat discharge
curve, a big advantage over Alkalines since transmit power doesn't
gradually decrease. And so far, I've never seen one leak.
