The kit you could buy, announced on the cover of Popular Electronics where it said "save over $1000", was around $400, IIRC. An early BYTE magazine I contained an ad for a 256Meg plug-in memory card for an S-100 bus that costs about $10,000US. Advance a few years and 256Meg of RAM was in a single chip that costs around $10 or less.
