There are at least two issues. The most obvious is latency -- how much "turn around" time are you able to tolerate? You've got to make the round trip up and back to the bird, and that's in addition to digital encoding latency. The second issue is bandwidth. I've heard that satellite systems aren't exactly speedy. :)
