A widow approached our club wanting help in disposing of her SK
husband's Collins and Drake equipment. I said I would test them
to see how well they worked. I brought them up using a Variac
and tried them into dummy loads and on the air. She handled the
sales via ebay etc.
Believe me, the chance to play with that equipment was more than
enough compensation. She insisted I take some of the pieces, so
I have a Schurr paddle connected to my K3 and a Collins phone
patch waiting to be connected.
I'm happy and would do it again. I think she is happy too.

When I helped a neighbor ham's widow dispose of his stuff about
ten years ago, she got EVERYTHING except what I had to pay for
shipping. I did all the packing. Buyers picked up the antennas
and power amps. I bought all of the hard line. Ditto for a few
years ago when a neighbor ham moved out of his house and moved
onto a sailboat! In fact, with the widow, I categorized his
huge junkbox, coax, hardline, and antennas. I coordinated more
than dozen or so of his friends to take down his antennas and
his towers. At least three guys did the climbing, with lots of
help on the ground. And when we had sold as much as we could,
several of us helped her drag what was left to several ham swap meets.
I took a bunch of the stuff I wanted, and paid her what anyone
else would have paid for it.
This is the ham radio that I grew up in, and I hope my XYL be treated that way
too.
