If my understanding is correct AFSK is optimized for RTTY where as DATA
A is for other audio digital modes. If operating AFSK then the range or
frequency of the tones are critical, being optimized for the RTTY tones,
unlike DATA A which will cover 200 Hz to 2700 Hz. Sounds like
operating in the incorrect mode for FT-8.

If I remember correctly, the KX3 can show zero bars when overdriven.
I's easy to check. Just bring the level up slowly from zero and check
that the ALC rises slowly.
Remember that there are at least 3 AF level controls. The one in the
program, the OS level control, and the knob on the KX3.
I don't know why any of them would change suddenly though.
An external RF power meter or another receiver can check if you are
transmitting.

I have been operating with FT8 and WSPR lately. Both use an
audio-generated
digital signal just like any AFSK mode. I tune up my transmitter to show
4-5 bars on ALC. Everything seems to work at first, but after one or two
transmissions the display shows only one bar on the left and one on the
right -- and if I move the Mic Gain, all bars disappear leaving a blank
display. The transmit light stays on but I can't tell if I'm
transmitting
any audio or not. What's going on??
