You are correct it works fine this way. I do it that way. Only one suggestion, use VOX. once tone is on the radio goes into transmit rather nicely. I do this for all the digital modes and have run into no problems. Once Elecraft added the internal sound card it really made operating easier.

Are you connected to the K3S using the USB cable?
If so, check the soundcard that WSJT-X is trying to use for audio output - it 
should be USB AUDIO CODEC.
You must NOT have anything plugged into the K3S LINE IN jack unless you are 
using a different soundcard than the internal one.

If the soundcard is correct, and you are using DATA A mode, set the input to 
LINE in the menu.

You will have to set the audio levels (there are multiple controls - some in 
your computer software and the LINE level (mic knob) of the K3S.  You must end 
up with 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flashing.
