I don't recall the details but have you read the posts by the Elecraft guys some weeks ago related to excess noise and loose grounding nuts (on or near the SO239 connectors if I recall correctly)?

Today as I was shutting down my station I turned off the KPA1500 first, and my noise dropped from S7 to S1 instantly. I turned the Amp back on and the noise came back.
