Close-talking" microphones are designed for use in very noisy environments, like military aircraft.They are not directional, rather they cancel all sounds more than an inch or two from their element. They are NOT "pleasant" sounding mics, they tend to be kind of raspy, their sole performance objective enough noise rejection that you can understand speech. When you hear speech from copters and similar environments, you're usually hearing one of these mics.
40 years ago, when I was doing a lot of live recording and also selling Shure products, they gave me an experimental mic with this sort of design that might be used for vocals by drummers. It sounded varying degrees of awful. :) Shure is a VERY good microphone company, based in/near Chicago.
