Hi Fred -- It depends on what time you are talking about. Some sources
document Carson using an RCA Type 77 DX ribbon mic in the NY shows.
Later, Johnny Carson used a Shure Model 33 desk mounted ribbon
microphone - Carson switched from a RCA ribbon mic to this Shure style
in the late 1960's. The Shure was presented by the manufacturer and was
inscribed with something like “Johnny’s Mic… Not Ed’s… Not Fred’s.”
Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers (www.heritagegalleries.com) of Dallas,
Texas, sold Johnny Carson’s Shure SM33 Ribbon Microphone at auction in
2005 for $50,787.50.
