I recently ordered a kit from the US. It arrived in 3 days by airmail. It was $40 so just above the threshold for applying VAT (£18 I believe).
My parcel was delivered by our postie resplendent with a big customs label saying £3.50 + £8 handling fee was due. Our postie looked at the label, shrugged and gave the parcel to my wife without collecting a penny. I think it is the luck of the draw, and the larger the amount the greater the chance that someone will ask you to pay. I was lucky with my K2 - was not asked for VAT on that either! Phil, G8JQH Recently ParcelFarce have started to crack down on the collection of fees, which a few years ago were left to the "discretion" of the postman delvering the package.
