Hi - Does any one know if a Cushcraft R5 vertical can
be grounded mounted and how high off the ground would
it need to be. I've only used mine in the past mounted

get it up there until the spring. 73's Norm K9NK

I haven't run any analysis, but think that the counterpoise rods should be isolated above the ground a bit. K7LXC and N0AX did comparison testing of several verticals and presented the results at the Dayton Hamvention in 2000 (copies of the report are available from <http://www.championradio.com/publications.html>.

One of the models they tested was the R8, which is built in a similar manner to the R5. I recall they had the base mounted about 7 feet above a ground screen. The results were (in my opinion) better overall than for the other types they tested. I have a similar Hy- Gain AV640 mounted on a pipe at 13 feet and am quite satisfied with the performance of that installation.
