It places your station in the middle of the other operators passband, and has the best chance for them to hear you. I have noticed this in contests. Some folks, especially with strong adjacent signals (meaning they are probably running a filter) will hear you better and respond quicker if you hit the middle of their passband. It helps with pile ups, DXepeditions, and especially if you are running QRP.
