Dave, There are a number of online resources to help ease the pain of SMT soldering/desoldering.
If you have access to older QRP magazines, there were many tips in them. AMQRP.ORG has useful info online. This document covers a lot of ground and may be helpful: http://www.avrfreaks.net/modules/FreaksArticles/files/15/Low%20Cost%20SMD%20Soldering%20Guide.pdf My experience with SM parts is that you need patience, a fine tip on your iron and good timing :o) Heating too long is a definite killer. If one is new to these, I would suggest a practice run on some dead/obsolete computer board. You can goof up and learn for free.
