I've been using a pair of Direct Sound's Extreme Isolation headphones for years. They are very good for blocking out noisy environments. They are not noise canceling, but rather use passive techniques (tight fit, sound absorbing material) to reduce ambient noise by 29dB (or so they claim). They are not the most comfortable to wear for long periods, but they are very effective.
