Rudolf, Yes, you can safely upgrade without adding hardware mods. You must leave CONFIG: VFO MD set to SPI1 (default) until after the K3 VFO Noise Reduction Mod has been installed. That mod is not difficult - just 2 diodes and 2 resistors (all leaded parts).
