I've heard the same.  It's a very slight frequency shift (maybe <10 Hz)
during keying that sounds like FM caused by a bad capacitor somewhere.  It
doesn't bother me but I've learned it's inside the K3 and not the external
signal, which was my first reaction.  I agree with you that it's most
noticeable on strong signals.
