I was going to also say to make sure you look at the errata. The method used to install the diffuser is different in the errata than the one in the manual. (i.e. the old way, you put the spacers on the diffuser leads themselves and they stay there after installation, the new way you put them underneath until you solder the leads. Then they're removed).
The new way is harder to do because the spacers are free to move about, but the finished installation looks a lot cleaner to me since you don't have those spacers permanently stuck around the leads and on the ends of the diffuser. And yeah the LCD goes over the diffuser.
