Correction - PAV (preference approval voting) and Ranked Approval are not identical. PAV requires complete rankings and uses those complete rankings to determine the winner if two or more candidates have majority approval. Ranked Approval requires only a partial ranking and assumes all candidates ranked are approved.
 
Example
 
5 candidates, 100 votes.
 
49 AB|CDE
2 BA|DCE
19 C|DEBA
16 D|CEBA
14 E|CDBA
 
A would win under ranked approval, B would win under PAV. Under FV, the second method mentioned in Brams and Sanver's paper, A and B are tied.
