The configure code is in a number of apps i use and is perfectly acceptable
to me (no allergy to GNU although i do consider more relaxed licenses
preferred)

Yea, i'm guessing this patch is too old to work correctly as well. I will
probobly have to download the tools to generate a makefile or autotools and
i definitely want to make it as generic as possible to weather changes.
Since it looks like i might be waiting a bit for any patches to go mainline
assuming they do at all. That patch has been waiting for several years
still open.
