>From the description of your symptoms, I would say that the driver is
very bad or badly configured (ie you have software opengl).
Normally, the output of 'glxinfo | grep direct' should be:
direct rendering: Yes
If it isn't the case on your machine, then you don't have 3D hardware
acceleration correctly set up (either that driver doesn't support your
card or it is misconfigured).
