This happens to me as well. Sometimes a ghost of the cursor stays
somewhere, when the real cursor is moving as you type. Using C-l
removes the ghost cursor.
I see it now too (see attached screen shot). On 10.5.1 using no special
fonts (Monaco 12) or modes (python-mode, font-lock, etc.) the cursor is
a non-blinking solid rectangle.
