Do they really stand in the way of a merge?

For various reasons, yes. Also, as you point out, there is the
Carbon work, which should also be done beforehand. Both because of
prevailing opinion on emacs-devel

Fact is that the Carbon maintainer is not interested in keeping Carbon alive on the 23 branch. He might be convinced otherwise, but I don't see how the Carbon port should delay your merge!

and because the merge would bring a
lot more Carbon users with their expectations.

Why would that be so?
We're talking about a merge on the current HEAD (23 branch).
This will not give you more users from Carbon Emacs Package or Aquamacs, only from Emacs.app people if you so choose. And users are a good thing: they find bugs.

(In my earlier e-mail, I didn't say I was going to do an Aquamacs release based on Cocoa after it's been merged. Aquamacs (and Carbon Emacs) are both based on the 22 branch at this point.)

Could someone who is familiar with the mac-* variables post a summary
of them? Or even better, a patch to ns-win.el adding aliases for
corresponding ns-* variables..

Their Doc strings are good, but I'm more than happy to explain missing details. I'd be happy to provide these aliases once it's checked into the Emacs 23 CVS.
