For ns-option-modifier / ns-alternate-modifier, there are two names  
for the same keyboard key in common use (a long story involving PC and  
Mac keyboards, and GNUstep).  Some users look for one, some another,  
in the variable name.  The new file "ns-carbon-compat.el" uses def-var- 
alias to make the NS port look more like the more popular Carbon port  
to lisp packages and end users.
