Actually, I did not give up from there. I built emacs from the
same revision omitting the --with-ns configuration option and
replaced the binaries src/temacs and src/bootstrap-emacs by the
corresponding binaries from that build. This allowed me to
compile the lisp files without any crashes. After that I removed
the binaries again and re-linked the executables again from the
NS sources. 

The result does not run either. When starting it, it crashes
in nsfont.m at some very obscure position (when incrementing a
loop index). Having got *very* frustrated I now simply gave up. 

If there's a usable revision for Linux/GNUstep in the repo or
even a .deb (not the historic ones from gnu.ethz.ch), I'd still
be happy to give it another try...
