Your memory is right, and I did see that. However, it is in the middle
of "Configuration of the ~fontspec~ package" section and I thought that
this information is important enough to mention in the intro.
(If you have strong objections, feel free to discard).

Right, performance might be an issue.
Maybe we can do the full scan only if there are missing characters? (In
`org-latex-compile--postprocess')
(This issue is not critical, but I want to mention it before I forget)
