I think what's there works very well. I also think that there's room for some visualization: which thread is heavier? which thread has had the most fervent updates? You could pack a good amount of data into surprisingly few pixels here; let's say a small litmus-type stripe with the last 24h (or something) worth of contributions, and colored stamps on that stripe representing unread messages from different participants (à la Gmail).
